Karate, which literally means the “empty hand,” is a method of self-defense that utilizes blocks, punches, kicks, and Jiu Jitsu. This includes throws and sweeps as well as joint manipulations, chokes, and other submission holds. In the Beginners Program, students will learn how to take basic techniques and transform them into life saving skills. Our Karate program serves teens and adults in Portsmouth, Chesapeake (Western Branch), and Suffolk.
Course: 10 months
Curriculum: Mastering basic and intermediate techniques.
Next Step: Karate Advanced Program
Once a student has completed the Karate Beginners Program, they will be ready to further their training in the Karate Fundamentals Program. This program is designed to teach core techniques that will enable one to function in a self-defense situation. The goal of this course is not only teach to effective self-defense, but to take students from White to Green Belt. Through the guidance of knowledgeable instructors and a structured curriculum, students will find their ability to set and achieve obtainable goals.
Program: Black Belt
Curriculum: Refine and master techniques taught in the Fundamentals Course; while developing a knowledge and awareness to adapt, react, and defend effectively.
Next Step: Leadership Program
Once a student has completed the Karate Fundamentals Program, it is time to master the techniques in the Karate Advanced Program. In this program, the objective is for students to be able to demonstrate fluidity when executing self-defense techniques and defensive patterns called Katas. Through time invested on the mat, students will learn more in depth techniques and develop a self-awareness that would allow them to anticipate an opponent’s attacks and effectively defend against them.
